Brown Butter Tips & Tricks
If you haven’t made brown butter before here are some helpful tips and tricks. For starters, making brown butter is very easy to make but it does require some attention. Once your butter has melted don’t leave the stove! Keep an eye on the butter and look for it starting to foam. Continue stirring the butter until you start to notice the butter turning a slightly tan color and little bits of brown start to form. Immediately remove your pan from the heat to ensure the butter doesn’t burn. This can all happen pretty quickly so make sure you stay by the stove. Once you have your brown butter you can add the marshmallows to make these crispy rice treats.

Brown Butter & Sea Salt Crispy Rice Treats
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Butter
- 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
- 10 oz bag Mini Marshmallows
- 5 cups Crispy Rice Cereal
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13 pan with butter. If you want thicker bars (which I prefer) you can make this in a smaller pan. I used a 8×10.5 pan for these bars. Make sure to grease the sides of the pan as well to make sure the bars don't stick. Set the pan aside.
- In a large pot melt the butter. Continue to allow the butter to melt on medium/high heat until you see the butter start to foam and you notice brown bits start to form in the butter. This happens pretty quickly, so don't step away from the stove. Once you have your brown butter, remove the pan from the heat and add the marshmallows.
- Stir the marshmallows until they have melted and add 1/4 teaspoon of the sea salt.
- Mix in the crispy rice cereal until everything is mixed together.
- Press the mixture into your prepared pan. I find a silicone spatula helps to spread the mixture in the pan. Sprinkle the top of the bars with the remaining sea salt.
- Let the bars cool before serving.
If you prefer your crispy rice treats to have a harder consistency you can add more crispy rice cereal. I prefer the bars to be more gooey so I stick to 5 cups of cereal for these bars. Sprinkle the top with some sea salt for a little salty/sweet flavor. I’m a big fan of the Maldon sea salt flakes for these bars. For a summer picnic or trip to the beach these crispy rice treats would be perfect! My family really enjoyed them during the Memorial Day holiday.
