The best way to spread Christmas cheer is decorating cookies for all to enjoy! This holiday sugar cookie recipe has been passed down from when my mom was a little girl. And I’m telling you they turn out perfect every year we make them (knock on wood). Turn on some Christmas music, make these cookies and have some fun together decorating them. Everyone in our family has such a fun time decorating these Christmas cookies and being creative with colors and decorations (I love scrolling Pinterest for ideas). It’s such a fun holiday tradition that the whole family can truly enjoy.
Holiday Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup Butter
- 1 cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 3/4 tsp Vanilla
- 2 1/4 cup Flour
- 3/4 tsp Baking Powder
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
Icing
- 1 cup Powdered Sugar
- 2 tbsp Millk
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg and vanilla to the creamed mixture and beat until you have a smooth yellow batter.
- In a separate bowl measure the flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg into a sifter and sift into a bowl. Pour half the sifted ingredients into the yellow batter. Stir with a spoon until the flour is blended into the batter. Add the rest of the sifted ingredients and mix until you have a stiff, light-yellow dough.
- Pat the dough down tightly into the bowl. Cover the bowl with a plate, and put it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Roll out the batter and use your favorite Christmas cookie cutters for the cookies.
- Bake the cookies at 400 degrees for about 8 minutes and allow at least 15 minutes for the cookies to cool before decorating.
- Measure the powdered sugar and milk and mix until the icing is stiff. If it is thin and runny, stir in a little more powdered sugar. Use food coloring to color the frosting however you like.
- Play some Christmas music, and have fun decorating the cookies with sprinkles found at your local grocery store.
Just remember to chill your cookie dough for around 2 hours before you cut out the shapes. This will ensure your dough doesn’t stick or become hard to work with the cookie cutters. Depending on how “well done” you like your cookies you can bake them for a longer period of time or take them out sooner. This is a big debate in our house since my sister and I like a chewy texture and my mom likes a crispy texture.
